Handbook
of North American Indians : Vol. 17 Languages by Ives Goddard (Editor)
An excellent reference work on the American Indian, synthesizing
all that is currently known of each tribes' archaeology, anthropology,
ethnology, history and linguistics. Special additional chapters are numerous
and help round out the picture, covering topics such as political organization,
religious movements, and patterns of assimilation and migration. The volumes
are arranged mainly by culture areas, although a few deal with special
topics such as arts and technology. Vol. 17 was released in 1996 and deals
with the native languages of North America, with linguistic synopses of
representatives from important language families, and a beautiful map which
shows the ancient linguistic geography of North America as it is understood
by scholars today.

work on American Indian languages. Provides complete references to texts,
grammars, and vocabularies in the native languages.
